I can only imagine the few remaining Atomic Mosquito fans spamming various fora with how terrible it all is.

So true. Way to go Lemon. Alley Oop is so much better than the sludge it used to be. Old people hate change.

Perhaps if they had changed the new strip’s name, there would have been none of the uproar. Let’s say, for sake of argument, that next week, the art and dialog from this strip was replaced by, just an example, La Cucaracha, but the title was still Rabbits Against Magic. Would people just say pretty cool, or would they wonder what happened to their favorite strip? I submit if the new strip had been called Cartoon Oop instead of Alley Oop, there would have been a substantially smaller uproar. It’s just common sense.

Or another workable idea would be to put a disclaimer at the top of each day’s strip, something to the effect that This strip is based on the Classic Alley Oop but other than the names being reused, nothing in it will in any way resemble the Classic Alley Oop strip, but will focus more on zany humour and topical events in today’s news for today’s hip millenial audience.

I’m not a long-time reader of Alley Oop, but I read it long enough to see that it still had a lot of potential (like most SF and fantasy) in the right hands. The originator died; the ideas and characters didn’t. And the Benders who took over didn’t actually have that many ideas. This new incarnation claims to be appealing to new, younger readers with ‘zany’ ideas. I have yet to read anything by a millennial writer that is predominantly geared toward the ‘zany’. Seems to me that the younger group has a strong grip on anger (and maybe a lot of hate toward anyone ‘different, at least on the part of the representative of that group posting here and at Alley Oop; hate and hip not being the same, by the way), but ’zany’? Not so much…

Zany put me on guard and sank my feelings that Alley Oop which can soar is just jumping from one mud pit into a different mud pit. Zanier and darkly colored.

But I am patient unlike young readers who seem to be too busy to even know about comics on the internet.
