In 1990? Is Michael talking about the Tiananmen Square protests? My guess is he is thinking of the demonstrations in East Germany that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. There wasn’t much in Canada at the time like what Mike is describing.
As for the me, the more interesting question would be: Why is Gordon sitting on Lawrence’s lap?
It was pretty quiet here, and has been for many years. My mother always told me that we live in the best place on Earth, and I’m inclined to agree, especially now. (Western Canadian, btw)
I’m with Brian. Mike, you watch too many movies. They glamorize riots, upheavals, etc, in movies. In real life, it’s scary. Be blessed you’re safe and not experiencing chaos and conflicts. If you’re bored, you need to join something – sports, clubs, etc, at school.
Good one from Brian. He & Gordon are the two I was most interested in seeing, as I’d largely missed their strip appearances growing up. Brian seems to just be a “Backgrounder” and occasionally the “sensible one” to counterbalance his wackier friends.
But this is a nice one. Michael kind of getting into the action of it all, the way young men do- kind of romanticizing the nature of fighting and protesting and yelling… but Brian kind of knows the reasons FOR all that fighting, so is the one to figure they’ve got it good.
This was done at a time when we were reading about and seeing terrible riots on TV. Nothing changes. As recently as last week, I was watching young people on the news preparing to protest and thinking how lucky we are to be living in Canada.

People who live in feeedom and under rule of law do not appreciate how good they have it sometimes. Then they push for more power in hands of government and rule by “direct democracy” (plebicite) and discover that society deteriorates. They quickly learn that deomcracy is defined as two wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner and government attracts the corrupt…the worst rise to the top. (Hayek, Rod to Serfdom).
That is why America was founded as a Republic With rule of law and not a democracy with majority rules destroying individual rights and the rule of man (with thier arbitrary whims). Sadly, America and the promise of protected natural rights is at the brink of destruction with collectivists and statists seeking the destruction of the only government ever created by the people to protect indivisual rights.
Soon, young folks like those characterized by Michael will be fighting in the street and the morals that we worshipped will be gone. They will see the new boss is not what he or she was promised to be. (Hat tip Pete Townshend and “wont get fooled again”)
