Poeschl’s judgment is apt as he was considering the constant magnetic field generated by steady DC flow. However, the operation of brushes and commutator cause a continuous series of interruptions of the DC and changing magnetic field. The effect of this in a DC motor (or AC power in universal motors) is rotation of the magnetic field generated between the armature and field, and rotation of the motor shaft. Evidently Poeschl failed to grasp this fact, i.e. generation of a changing magnetic field in the armature windings in a DC motor. Tesla saw that AC produces a essential changing magnetic field by its nature. The practical problem was to design a machine that could exploit this fact. The solution was to employ a shorted armature situated in a rotating magnetic field. Like the DC motor armature, which is wound with interconnected coils of wire, laid in slots between magnetic poles, connected to a commutator, the AC motor armature is made with a series of short circuited conducting material (usually aluminum) cast between similar slots. The rotating AC field could be generated by field designs similar to those used in DC motors. When the shorted armature (rotor in AC parlance) is surrounded by a wire wound field (stator) supplied with AC multi-phase power, the resulting rotating magnetic field induces a torque in the shorted rotor. Voila, a brushless, sparkless, essentially maintenance free electric motor! Single phase motors operate in the same way however these must be designed with features or auxiliary devices that allow them to start by generation of an synthetic leading second phase and starting torque.
