It is a testimony to Mike’s arrogance that he thinks he can go on dates with his girlfriend without Elly noticing. It is also a testimony to Elly’s style of parenting that Mike’s arrogance will probably be justified.
If Mike had explained why he wanted the advance on his allowance, Elly might have been receptive. No guarantee that he’d get it, but at least Mom would know why he was asking.
Well, a cheap date is still a date. I mean it is time together down by the river or in the park or anything really. I guess it takes a while to get to that comfort level.
Well, this is interesting. I was using the vernacular of the day when I came up with this dialogue. I guess kids have been saying, “she went/he went” for a long time. No wonder it drives me crazy!!
Used to have parents drop us at movie theatre or mall – It was not big deal.
Weird was when Mom decided instead of going out we should eat at home and we had a romantic dinner at home with Mom doing cross stitch in the next room.
Frame your request like that, Michael, and your dad might cough up the advance.
Of course, when he and your mom eventually compare notes, you’ll have to deal with the consequences of playing them off each other, but that’s part of the teenage experience.

At least Elly didn’t give him the advance on his allowance after he was so sassy to her all week.

Modern translation: “I was, like, all ‘Wanna go out?’, and she was, like, all ‘Sure!’”

Take her to the mall, show her off, walk her home, fumble the 1st kiss and then brag the next day.

My first date was with his mother driving the car. I had not seen that coming.

That’s kinda like the way I asked my wife to marry me. It’s been 46 years now.

He just asked her, Gordon. It’s often as simple as that.

Sometimes the simple approach is the most effective.
