This is a followup to my all-time favorite Herman cartoon, in which two men are standing at the door with a huge two-man saw, and announce “Piano movers!”

its called ‘mitosis’. There will be little pianos running around soon

Baby ain’t so grand, anymore.

The keyboard in the living room will be fine. The rest maybe in the family room or the wood pile.

I’m surprised the keys are not in a basket.

“And, have you seen my assistants? Skinny guy in a bowler and a rotund dude with a tiny mustache.”

I bought an old upright piano, asked the salesperson if there would be a problem moving it to my apartment on the 3rd floor. He said “Oh no, we do this all the time”, he did not include himself in the “we”. The two guys who showed up at my building were not happy about the two flights of outdoor stairs they were about to tackle. To their credit, they managed to get that piano into my place. When they were finished, they politely asked me to call someone else if I ever wanted it moved again.

We saw a sad documentary a while ago about the lack of interest in pianos these days. People literally couldn’t give them away, let alone sell them. Some sad shots of beautiful upright pianos in dumpsters and on rubbish heaps. Apparently there is no longer a tradition of families wanting pianos and lessons for their children.

Unfortunately all too true as we discovered on our last move!
