A “skunked” dog is not pleasant to have around. Two “skunked” dogs are even worse!
Many years ago, in Arizona, my St. Bernard and her daughter both ran into a skunk right outside my bedroom window – the open one, of course – at about 4 am on the day my parents were arriving from Connecticut for a visit.
No tomato juice baths for those sorry guys. I called a boarding kennel/groomer/vet that I knew, and by 7 am had the smelly Saints bundled in the back of my pickup and delivered to the groomers to be “de-skunked”. I frankly, didn’t care what it was going to cost me!
By 4 pm, thanks to the groomers and also a concentrated deodorizer that removed all traces of Pepe Peeyew from our home, my folks couldn’t detect a trace of the polecat either in the house or on the dogs.
Tomato juice does nothing, first when a dog gets skunked DO NOT WET THE DOG, water will get the smell into the dogs skin and you won’t get it out any time soon. Use 2 parts Dawn dish washing detergent, one part hydrogen peroxide, and one part baking soda NO WATER. Put this all over the dog and rub it in like shampoo, let it sit for 15 to 20 min, now rinse, repeat, smell the dog, repeat as necessary. Wash the dog as you normally would. I own a dog wash, this usually works.

I see a LONG bath in Otis’ future…and maybe a couple nights of sleeping outdoors!

And I think one of the things that Spike is teaching is that sometimes you have to learn stuff the hard way!
