I had a friend years ago who owned a deaf dog. When I first met him I asked him what was his dogs name was? He joked it doesn’t matter what I call him, he still won’t come to me anyway! But he had no problem with visual recognition and he had a pretty good sniffer too when it came to food!
All my dogs went deaf in their latter years, but as puppies I trained them with hand gestures such as sit , come, stay. I always spoke and used the hand gestures at the same time, so that when they started losing their hearing they had no problem adapting. I was fortunate that none of my dogs lost their eyesight, which many older dogs do in old age.
A special fur is a very special fur. Our collie cross Barney was our first rescue and first boy. He spent the last 6 years of his life blind. As long as we didn’t move the furniture he was fine

Wally replaced the lack of sense of hearing with common sense.

Since there’s apparently nothing wrong with his nose, we can assume Wally can read certain olfactory messages as well.

HEY. If he’s deaf, then why is he off the leash? He can’t hear you calling him to come back!
