This is so bittersweet for me…… I once had a beautiful grey kitten long, long ago. He followed me everywhere, we would play together. He was my best buddy.
I named him Hermes for he was as swift as the wind…..
A senior monk and a junior monk were traveling together. At one point, they came to a river with a strong current. As the monks were preparing to cross the river, they saw a very young and beautiful woman also attempting to cross. The young woman asked if they could help her cross to the other side.
The two monks glanced at one another because they had taken vows not to touch a woman.
Then, without a word, the older monk picked up the woman, carried her across the river, placed her gently on the other side, and carried on his journey.
The younger monk couldn’t believe what had just happened. After rejoining his companion, he was speechless, and an hour passed without a word between them.
Two more hours passed, then three, finally the younger monk could contain himself any longer, and blurted out “As monks, we are not permitted a woman, how could you then carry that woman on your shoulders?”
The older monk looked at him and replied, “Brother, I set her down on the other side of the river, why are you still carrying her?”
One day, I saw a beautiful black cat sitting next to our driveway. She let me pat her, then she followed me into the house. This terrorized our spaniel (who was elderly & deathly afraid of cats), but she checked out every room in the house. Then she went away.
A few month later, our beloved spaniel died; soon after that, the cat came back. She’d come in, sit with us while we were watching TV, or just chill with us, but she never asked for food. This went on for a long time.
That summer, I graduated from high school, and my family went on a 3-week car trip. My grandmother stayed at our house to watch it & check our mail & such. The day we came home, the cat was sitting on our porch, waiting for us. My grandmother told us that the cat was not there a single day that we were gone…and yet, there she was when we came home.
We decided to find out whose cat she was, and made a neighborhood search. My younger brother found her family. They told us that, while she always came home for dinner, she was never happy there with their 2 other cats. They gave her to us, including all of her vet papers. We named her Vulcan and she was so happy with us for a few years.
When my husband & I were dating, when he would take me home from a date, Vulcan would jump up on the hood of the car and stare in, “chaperoning” until I got out of the car.
She was a very beloved pet…until the Saturday morning when my mother went garage sale shopping and saw her on the side of the road. She had been hit by a car. We buried her in our back yard.
My son (39yrs) has a sweet outside kitty named Buddy who loves to run around the hard with him. They jump & run around the yard. I need to film that next time, don’t I?

You’ve got a friend in me
You’ve got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you’re miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you’ve got a friend in me
Yeah, you’ve got a friend in me

One of my favorite zen koans:

Get ready for it Peekaboo. You had to cross a stream to get out there, so you will have to cross it on the way home.
