Man: Excuse me, girls? I noticed you taking that CD out of your purse and returning it to the shelf back in that store. I can't tell you how glad I am that you chose to do that. Because I also noticed when you first slipped it into your purse. Paige: Not to be competitive, but I think my glad beats your glad. Man: Understand we'd be having a different conversation right now.

And thus ends this week’s Very Special Episode of Foxtrot.
(Seriously, though – they really thought they’d get away with it?)

And afterward, Paige soundly whacked her friend with her purse for even suggesting shoplifting.
At least, that’s what I hope happened.

Gotta love those kids on the escalators, and the one staring at them in the last panel.

I used to be able to go to the store with a dollar and get pants, a shirt, shoes and socks. Now, they have those cameras everywhere.

I didn’t think that Paige’s friend had it in her to walk the talk. They are always the first ones to pass out. @ Yukoneric: face palm.

In most states, he could have arrested her as soon as she’d concealed it.
But realistically, they very rarely stop shoplifters anymore.

Don’t shoplift in southeastern Michigan or you”ll be doing community service for many hours!

MrGromit :”In most states, he could have arrested her as soon as she’d concealed it.” Why? You must pay before exit and not conceal the goods from the cashier, but you are not obliged to hold the merchandise in sight while you are moving INSIDE the shop. I might choose to put a CD in my pocket in order to have both hands free to choose a second CD: the important thing is that at the end I pay BOTH..

If Paige had been really slick, she’d have slipped two copies of the CD into her purse, and then returned one to the shelf.
Would have satisfied the security guard, and she’d still have successfully stolen one.
Or so I’ve heard.

Really slick, or really dishonest?

I think the friend who tried to talk her into the shoplifting really learned her lesson (:anybody know CPR?”) As an aside my youngest and I many years ago were walking in a mall when four young people surrounded a clean cut matronly woman. She started screaming “I’ll put it back, I’ll put it all back” but was handcuffed all the same. A lesson learned by a four year old that she remembers quite clearly even over 20 years later.
