why is my brain humming, “You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant…” Arlo I loved your daddy’s music [not his politics] and you obviously learned from your sire, but really all that over Thanksgiving and a closed dump?
I’m not sure Stairway to Heaven would be the same success if it were released today, and it has nothing to do with changing tastes in music. It has to do with my belief that Led Zeppelin released that song in an era when disc jockeys personally cued up and played actual records, and that, like other humans, sometimes a disc jockey’s gotta go spend some time on the loo.
I’ve thought that from the beginning, and my theory was confirmed one fine night of my teen-aged life when the midnight DJ at WLAV (how appropriate) cued up the Stairway and scooted down the hall. He returned at the end of the requisite eight minutes to discover that the needle had gotten stuck at about the 30-second mark. “Hellooooooooo,” he said. “Shoulda gone with Free Bird,” he probably thought.
I recently heard someone asking a bunch of kids, “If you had to chose one song that you would have to listen to constantly for the rest of your life, what would you pick?” My choice would be " 4’33’’ ".

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, 49:16 or Oxygène by Jean-Michel Jarré, 39:44. Dim the lights, a rye and coke, you’re ready.

If you really want to get your brain revved up, go with “Flight of the Bumblebee”.

Peaceful Easy Feeling (1972) by the Eagles. It’s country-pop, but who cares? I like it!
