Zonker’s nuts. My brother worked off the books for years in the 1980s – he had trouble getting legitimate work due to some really stupid decisions. He didn’t speak Spanish, either, and down here in sunny Florida, you’d think that all those jobs went to immigrants… NOPE.
Of course, he also got caught, spent YEARS paying off the IRS (but he managed to stay out of prison), and eventually became a legitimate, on-the-books, and well-respected construction worker.

SS # use to very specific as to geography, for example people in Central California got # in the mid 500s, people in Northeast got 100 numbers.
