It’s that awkward age where the girls really are their friends, and they really do like them in some capacity, but they just can’t admit it.

My daughter spent a year in Japan as a high school exchange student. She was 15/16 at the time. She has two older brothers and is used to interacting with guys in class. However in Japan, high school boys and girls have nothing to do with each other, so the Japanese male students had no idea how to process my daughter’s friendly interactions with them. I suppose much of the whole boy/girl thing could be developmental, but it seems another part of it is cultural.

A two-week summer camping trip provided six weeks of fodder for the author. This storyline has been running since June 11th. He did good by it.
