Now that I think about it, why is someone with orange hair called a redhead? I mean the hair isn’t as red as a fire hydrant.

Say “Orangehead” out loud five or six times. Then you’ll know why. Come to think of it – say “rougehead”, “scarlethead”, “crimsonhead”, “vermillionhead” – see? None of them roll off the tongue quite like “redhead”, do they? None have the zip, the snap, the crisp tongue-feel that redhead does.

Dye it blonde over that orange and you’ll be “Titian” or “Strawberry Blonde”.

“From fiery, uncompromising temperament” to “yeah, ok, maybe” in no time. That’s orange for you.

Have some “white” grapes Alice. English usage is not always logical.

My sons have this beautiful copper hair. Quite glad they are not carrot top. I called them coppertop.

I have a lot of redheads in my extended family: half-Irish cousins, the other half being northern Italian with a lot of red hair, too, from a region where Irish monks settled in Early Medieval times (think the monastery of Bobbio).I would never call any “orange heads”; it just does not compute….

Ok, my sister is a true redhead! There is no temper wilder than that of a redhead! She once threw a jar of cold cream at me. We were staying at our grandparents hotel. It hit the wall right by the door as my grandmother rounded the corner to scold us for screaming in the hotel! We’re great friends now, but it took years of fighting to get over it! We both have huge tempers…the screaming kind. I still have issues with her but it’s not worth it.
