Yes, adolescence is a very challenging time, and confusing as well. There is a great deal to learn, and much of it just leads to awareness that most everything one learns leads to needing to learn something more. Every victory leads to more challenges. I think Baldo is doing a far better than average job of dealing with these challenges, and will benefit more from encouragement than from criticism. I think that we, his elders, in memory of our own struggles and profound relief when we handled them well, should remember how we felt in this phase of growing up and give more attention to his successes than to his difficulties. Let the rewards of success settle into his memory before thrusting more challenge on him. And always be sparing of criticism—-we can’t know how severely he criticises himself.
