Darn, these are all good choices. I’ll admit that the first time I saw The Quiet Man I was a kid and didn’t really understand it. Add about twenty years and it moved me. So did Maureen O’Hara. ;-)
The most memorable to me was “True Grit”.A few of my shipmates and me were invited to watch a movie aboard a French warship (those guys have BEER!), and True Grit was shown with the dialog dubbed in French. We constantly snickered when John Wayne spoke in that effeminate-sounding language. The kicker was in the final scenes where Wayne takes on Robert Duvall with the French version of “Fill your hand, you S.O.B.!” We burst out laughing so hard our hosts thought we had too much “refreshment”.
Playing a cowboy is a little like country singing. Anyone can do it. To really see Wayne’s acting abilities you have to get him out of his comfort zone. That’s why “Sands of iwo Jima, Reap the Wild Wind, They were Expendable” and movies like that were some of Wayne’s best performances.
No one mentioned “Donovan’s Reef”. There aren’t any bad Duke movies in my book some of the stories aren’t my cup of tea. My fav is “Rio Brovo”. I saw it in the theater when I was in school and fell in love then. When I finally had a VCR and bought the tape I watched it every week for months, I still watch it every so often. FAVORITE. In Rio Lobo there are great background stories there.
Here’s another one: McLintock!(1963) oh, and and going back, The Quiet Man (1952). And a really horrible movie I read about that was shot in one of the worst places for a movie: near an atomic testing area!

If you didn’t see “Wake of the Red Witch” you missed one of John Wayne’s best performances.

I favor " True Grit “. But I gotta ask,” Did He Ever Make A Bad One ? " This makes picking " One" kinda hard to do.
