Growing up in a small town, we held a neighborhood garage sale every fall. And the churches in town would have white elephant sales every season — Catholics had one before Thanksgiving, Lutherans, before Easter, Methodists, early summer. We kids would be the ones to sit there all day and ‘sell’. The prices were so low, it seemed ridiculous and I asked my mom why we bothered — just give it away. And she explained that when someone bought a blouse for a dime, it was hers with no obligation, but if you gave her the blouse, she would feel obligated and small towns just weren’t big enough for people to be burdened with those kinds of feelings.
Over the years I have gotten some of My Best Tools at Flea Markets and Yard Sales. Most of them manufactured back when they were "Made with Quality and Longevity of Service in mind " Actual Metal Cases, etc. No Plastic and didn’t look like someones “Pretty” tennis shoe’s or Keyless Chucks that wear out quickly if actually Used a Lot so you have to carry Channel lock Pliers to tighten and loosen the chucks. Slip in Jigsaw Blades instead of actual Lock In Screws or back of blade support bearings ? OK for DIY but not Job Sight, etc. “New isn’t Always Better.”
My sister had garage sales where she priced everything ridiculously low, mostly to get rid of it. I was amazed by the number of people who wanted to get a discount on that price.
