My high school is being remodeled and many of the classrooms (including faculty offices) is made up of portables for the time being until the finishings next year.
For the life of me, I can’t remember exactly how I got my books too and from elementary school, but I’m positive I didn’t have to schlep a huge backpack around like Petey. Maybe some stuff was left at school and other stuff at home, and I only carried what I needed for the day.
But when I see schoolkids today, they all have backpacks, and they often seem quite large.
They called them “sub-schools” when I was a kid. “Sub-school 1,” “Sub-school 2,” etc. At first I felt special in there. Then I felt lesser than the “real” school buildings’ students. Then I realized I’d never settle that and just got into the drudgery of school.
This one brings back some memories. Went to a rural grade school, 24 of us in two classrooms. For ninth grade, I went to a school in town, about 600 of us in two older three floor buildings joined by a a two floor connection. The stairs were all one-way. Got so mixed-up trying to get from one classroom to another. Sometimes the stair guards would let me go the wrong way if class was about to start and I looked like I was about to cry.
Portables were a feature of all my schools. It was amazing how the “Great Planners” never recognized that the baby boom in primary school was going to spread to high schools and even universities and jobs. They started building more schools right after the baby boom peak passed!

Does this little girl look in the mood for a dark, gruesome story? I think not!

I’m pretty sure this arc is from last year. Those portables and Peteys’ story is awfully familiar.
