When I was in the hospital last week having a hip replacement, the head floor nurse was a very friendly, talky young woman of about 35. She is in a happy relationship with a military career guy. She shared all their plans: he apparently has made spread sheets and projection charts and what not for the directions their lives will take after he’s retired from the military. Being 70+, I smiled to myself, thinking how all those charts and prognostications and predictions mean absolutely NOTHING. Because I’m also pretty smart and kindly as well as mature and experienced [grin/wink], I didn’t say a word. I’m glad there are still young people who have optimism, and, when those charts/predictions/plans go awry through outside influences, I hope her/their optimism and strength is enough to get them through.

We never really get much instruction. We each learn on our own.
