What really happened was that the media stopped reporting them, for some weird reason.

In the NHL nicknames are merely one syllable contractions of a name, sometimes with a “sie” suffix.

Chris Berman tried giving nicknames but when it became a shtick, he overdid it. Still, ones like Oddibe “Young Again” McDowell were pretty good in their own way.

The huge multi-year contracts are more likely to LESSEN their effort. Because human nature……

Colts linebacker Darius Leonard, who as a rookie led the league in tackles last year, is nicknamed ‘the Maniac’

Best nickname I ever heard of was for a college basketball player from Eastern Europe named Jacek Duda. His teammates called him “Zipadee.”
