In Classical mythology, Actaeon was a hunter. One day when he was out hunting in the woods with his dogs, he happened upon the goddess Artemis/Diana bathing naked in a forest pool. When Artemis realized she’d been seen, she turned Actaeon into a stag and he was torn to pieces by his own dogs. One flashing experience of transcendent beauty, followed by immediate destruction.
I’ve always imagined that Actaeon’s last thought was “Totally worth it!!!”
