“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”
I can tell you which one of those two I would like to have as a neighbor. Now if I could find a mechanic and a doctor that feel that way, it would sure make me happy.
A few days ago I was sitting in my house and heard a sound almost like someone hitting the side of the house with a piece of wood. Went outside, found one of the neighbors (who I admit I don’t know real well, multi-generational group in the house), an elderly gentleman, hauling material removed and left over from some deck repair work they had done, tossing the wood over the back yard fence into the front yard. Started to offer to help, then noticed I had a larger branch down in my yard, so I went to take care of that first. The neighbor told me to put it with his wood, he would haul it all off. I did so, then helped haul the pile into the trailer to be removed. He thanked me for coming out to check on the noise, then thanked me for helping him with the wood. In turn, I thanked him for hauling the stuff off, and reminded him that helping each other was what neighbors did.

I do not work for free, but friends and family do get a heavily discounted rate that can often be paid in barter… aka food.

I can relate. People often shake their heads when they find I don’t charge for my IT help; I only charge companies…

Happiness is a nice thing. It doesn’t fit in a wallet.
