While you can spend hundreds for a set of headphones, I’ve got a pair of $12 lightweight Koss phones I bought online a decade ago and used while working in radio for years afterward (and still do for freelance spot and feature production). Depending on what Elly got, Mike comes out more than okay.
Depending on how persnickety the end user is about the technical aspects, you could have done much better than that, price wise. Even at the time when this installment was first published.
Let me see if I get this straight. The kid is so irresponsible he leaves his Walkman on the floor which is so filthy with trash on the floor he can’t see it and steps on and breaks his headphones. In response to this irresponsibility, the mother goes out and buys him not one, but three new headphones. Is this the appropriate parenting response?
Elly appears to be stockpiling headphones so they are ready WHEN her son carelessly breaks them because they don’t hold any actual value for him and he has learned that he does not have to be responsible for them.

Let me guess, Mike wants “Beats by Dr. Dre” grade headphones (which are DURNED expensive, if you ask me). :/

He wants the headphones to block all of you out.

Now in the modern day you actually can get a decent set of earbuds for $20

Not sure what time this is set in. Do the kids play with an Atari 5200?

How much would $30 be in today’s value? I don’t know the year this one came out to make the comparison.

Is this like gift of the magi? Didn’t he just step on his “music player”? ;-)

Apparently she isn’t aware that he stepped on his player (SEE: yesterday).

At first, I read the “Battery Bin” as ‘Entropy (something).’
That would probably have been more appropriate…
