It wasn’t just “a scare”. Hundreds of literal Soviet agents (mainly American sympathizers) had infiltrated the military, the State Department, universities, some charitable foundations, Hollywood, and the Manhattan Project. The luckiest thing ever to happen to the Soviets was that McCarthy was a slimeball who besmirched anti-Communism and made actual Communists seem like innocent victims.

It was just before I got into the first grade so I really didn’t hear much about it until I got into high school in 1967.

Sadly, history does seem to repeat itself.

That may have been the luckiest thing up until Trump was elected. In the McCarthy era, they had agents in place trying to influence what was happening in this country. None of them ever got elected president. None of them ever denied aid to fight off a Soviet invasion until the country involved agreed to help in their reelection. We had a serious problem back then, but it’s not even close to what we have now.

While it wasn’t current events, it wasn’t ancient history either. I had to do a report on it.
