Most dishwashers use 3 – 3.5 gallons per wash cycle, and the same for rinse. So 6 – 7 gallons per load. Unless your water heater is within a few feet of your sink, you’ll run out one to two gallons just getting the hot water to the tap. Use the dishwasher.

When I was fifteen, I washed dishes by hand after school at my step-dad’s German restaurant in a 10 × 12 kitchen. Hand washing is overrated.
