I used to live in Cleveland, OH. In the winter when the lake would freeze the Coast Guard would issue a notice when the ice was thick enough to go out ice fishing. They would do the opposite in the spring, and say the ice is too thin for fishing, ice fishing season is over. The other fun thing that would happen, particularly in the spring would be some one would be out on the ice when a section would break off and start heading for Canada. The Coast Guard would fly one of its helicopters out, pick up the stranded fisherman, leave his truck and ice hut, then issue a huge fine for polluting the the lake when his truck goes down, plus a bill for the rescue, and an order to have his truck retrieved from the bottom.
