I remember a few years back I stopped to hold a door open for an elderly lady coming into the Post Office. I thought the old girl was going to have a stroke she was so shocked at me holding the door for her. When common courtesy gets that kind of reaction, something has really gone wrong with this country.
I have four sisters who taught me about the strength of women and that showing them respect and common courtesy does not imply they are weak (though I still tease my sisters that they are too weak to open doors and pull out chairs to the detriment of my overly-bruised shoulder – but hey, that’s what loving brothers do). When I pull out the chair for my GF she still – after all these years – sits in the other chair – and not to be impertinent – she just never received this kind of respect and attention from her long marriage (and he was a smug, selfish AH)…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies – God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
etiquette varies from culture to culture, of course, but in japan you’re more likely to have the person in front of you just let the door slam in your face after passing through. people are invariably shocked (pleasantly mostly, but not always) when i hold the door for them as i go through…
