The common concept of a tar pit is that it trapped animals daily. Actually they seemed to have trapped on average one animal every 100 years or so. However, given millions of years of operation, that’s still a lot of animals.
Fun fact: the tar pits are really asphalt, not tar. And no, there were never dinosaurs in them – tar/asphalt pits didn’t exist until millions of years later.
