Very true! So many of the early sitcoms seemed to have older actresses playing the moms of young kids. I remember thinking that watching Leave it to Beaver years ago.
I had an aunt whose specialty was Bread’n’butter pickles. No one in my family liked them, but Dad wouldn’t tell her, so we kept getting them, year after year, until we moved to New Jersey. Being the frugal sort, she wouldn’t pay for shipping.
Carroll O’Connor was 44 when ‘All in the Family’ debuted. Marlon Brando was 47 when he played Vito Corleone. I still look at those and think how old they are, yet I’m almost a decade older than that now. At least Aunt Bea was older than I am now in that show.
I watch the movie “Jaws” every year around the 4th of July. As the years went by, I was surprised to notice how my attraction to the different men changed. (Though I have always like all of them.) When I first saw it at about age 20, Richard Dreyfuss as Hooper looked the best to me. About 15 years or so later, Roy Scheider as Brody would have been my first choice. After that, Robert Shaw as Quint looked like the best choice! Now I’m too old to be picky…I’m the just the ol’ lady who ogles ’em all!
