Snoopy thinks, "I read a book about a cat once.."<BR><BR> Snoopy thinks, "I read it when I was going to obedience school.."<BR><BR> Patty says, "'Silas Marner' is on our 'required reading' list." Snoopy thinks, "So was the cat book."<BR><BR>

I think Silas Marner was one of the novels we read in 9th grade English. I guess Schulz really didn’t know too many books geared towards children between 5 and 10. For example, Rerun had mentioned in an earlier strip about Dick and Jane – I think those books were pretty much removed from most schools in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s because they didn’t have a diverse group of characters, just 3 white kids, a dog, and maybe a cat.

In the Second Grade, I read The Space Cat. Then The Space Cat goes to the Moon, The Space Cat Goes to Mars, and The Space Cat Has Kittens. One or two of these may have been Third Grade.

Richard Armour liked to tell the story of how an English teacher got her students to read Silas Marner and like it. She told them it was considered an obscene book, that it was written by a woman named Mary Ann who liked to be called George, and that they might get so caught up in the story that they’d completely miss the author’s message. Her clincher was that it was only available in paperback.

At least Peppermint Patty doesn’t have to read “Anna Karenina” like Rerun does.
