This is one of the major issues that I have with Christianity. It doesn’t seem reasonable that a loving deity would have only two options (heaven/hell) for his fallable creations. This suggests that, if there is a god or gods, it/they are not the Christian one.
This falsely presupposes that going to heaven or hell is a matter of reaching a certain level of goodness. Heaven is perfect. Nobody can reach the level of perfection. You have to find God’s plan of salvation and accept that.

Traditionally, I though that the RC Hades was a place where souls went so they had a chance to work off their sins and make it into heaven.

When you go to Heaven, you find peace.
When you go to Hell, you find yourself right back here living another life. They don’t say “Life is Hell” for nothing. ;-)
