In the fifth panel, the vine appears to be at the end of its trajectory. Mighty swing or not, that vine wouldn’t carry Tarzan much farther than he already is – right in the path of the charging rhino
Well, of course! Couldn’t have things go easily right off the bat for the spoiled brat and the Lord of the Jungle. Time for T’Zan to demonstrate his aquatic prowess and mighty thews!
well in the books the lion was always attacking Tarzan or someone else when he killed them as I remember. ERB didn’t know that much about animals in general, really. Horses, maybe. He rode horses for awhile with the cavalry in Arizona and later did some cowboying on his brother’s ranch in Idaho. But African zoology? Perhaps he had a fear of the big cats. To me, Tarzan was a fantasy story. Originally it was…well, it was a Tarzan story, not exactly fantasy. But later ERB mixed Tarzan in with H Rider Haggard sorts of lost civilizations, Arthur Conan Doyle’s Lost World kinda thing…Opar…immortality drugs…Of course Philip Jose Farmer created a whole separate level of Tarzan fantasy…I almost liked that last Tarzan movie that came out. At least Tarzan himself was intelligently handled in the film. I liked much of the film. Kind of a mess though. . ,the best ERB movie is the underrated John Carter.

Nice to see this strip with the proper colors. My copies have a lot of orange in the colors.

I was wondering how the writer was going to string out a 30 second rescue. Loving Gil Kane’s artwork.

“Falling for you”, or “how strong is your vine?”

That was one long vine. Turns out a weak one as well.

Tarzan ignored the 200 lb. maximum tensile strength warning tag.

Not clear why the boldface is in the balloons. In some (like the boy’s) they add something, but most of them seem out of place.

Still wondering who George is in the credits. The colorist? In one of the online versions at erbzine there is no third name.

Finally. Through all the old Tarzan movies, the TV show and comics never saw one vine break until Friday!

Rhinos have terrible eyesight, so he might’ve missed the kid. Looks like T made the situation worse.

also in the “tarzan killing the lioness” strip you provide the link for—I looked at it, it doesn’t appear to have been written by ERB.

It s ok Tarzan it happens to everyone now and then, you get a little older and heavier then your vine snaps when you least expect it…
