Nice call back to Max von Sydow’s early role in Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal in which he played a 14th Century knight in Sweden when the Black Death was ravaging Europe. The iconic confrontation of the Knight vs. Death… over a game of chess… still has power to shock and thrill these many decades later. He was a great actor and Bergman cast him in eleven of his films.
So here we see Leo in the role… though the chess game goes nowhere.
Black Death… resonates with the age of the coronavirus.
Truly great film; I’ve watched it several times. The way things are going around here with collecting the deceased from homes, I’m wondering if the ambiance might be lightened by handing out bells and calling out “Bring out your dead” for nostalgia’s sake…
