My grandparents had a wired remote many years ago, no need for batteries. Not bad if you didn’t mind a wire going across the room that looked like the size of a transatlantic cable.
When we lost track of the remote we tried to go to the TV to turn it off and could not find any button on it to turn it off! (It is a wall mount flatscreen.) We ended up having to unplug it!
Problem today is that TVs can not be used without the remote unless one wants to sit with their finger on the channel up or down button for hundreds of channels. Why don’t they have batteries in the house – we do.

It’s a man thing. Of course, he did.

Yeah, but you need to amortise that effort over the life of the batteries. It’s net laziness.

You need the remote for some TV functions. But you should always have spare batteries in the house.
So many things today are rechargeable, so why not remotes?

To be fair, many ‘smart’ tv’s these days must be operated by remote for any kind of functionality.

Luckily I keep spare batteries, I don’t even know where the manual controls on my TV are.

Must be an old TV. None of my TVs have controls on the TV.
