Philosophical question time: do you think Calvin is completely able to tell reality apart from his imagination? Because there are times where he clearly knows what’s real and what’s fake, but there are also the times he tries to jump out the window because he thinks he’s Spaceman Spiff. And that’s not even getting into the matter of Hobbes.
Considering that prison..er…public school takes a creative, eager to learn child and through rote memorization and drills turns him or her into an unthinking drone, I don’t blame Calvin a bit. :/
What happened to the Earthing explorer? He was abducted by the large sinister aliens and taken to one of the most hideous torture facilities in the known universe!
Had a kindergarten student one time that we had trouble with getting her on the bus, (I was the driver). One time her grandmother shoved her in, I held her arm with one hand and shut the door with the other. Her grandmother told the girl’s mother that was the last time Granny was putting her on the bus, mom could do it from then one. That little girl graduates this year and I still tease her about it.
My 10 year old grandson is doing on-line math work… common core math. He showed me a problem: 14 times 29. Then he showed me how it had to be done.
Draw a rectangle that is 10 by 20 units. On the “10” side add a rectangle that is 10 by 9. On the “20” side add a rectangle that is 20 by 4. Fill in the corner with a rectangle that is 9 by 4. Calculate the area of each rectangle and add those areas.
As an occasional math tutor since 7th grade, how are we supposed to deal with this &%$@?
Calvin’s Mom needs to use a little psychology and tell Calvin if he doesn’t go to school and pass, he gets additional years with Mrs. Wormwood until he does.

I literally rode the school bus with a kid who put his mother through this same thing every day. He was the son of the principal.
