I can’t imagine what it would be like to send vital messages by pigeon, not knowing for an hour or much more whether it got there or if it will make it back. I understand the pigeons were targets, even if they were hard to hit. Well, I guess it is not as bad to see a loved one set to sea in a tall ship, not knowing when you should really start worrying. We never had it so good.
speaking of birds, I’m reminded of the scene in The Longest Day (in both the book and the movie), when the British press tried to use them to send news of what was happening on the beaches and when they were released by the newsmen, instead of flying toward Britain, they flew in the opposite direction…
I wonder if the guy in charge of the pigeons is lucky or not. I mean they were considered important in past conflicts so was the guy in charge of feeding and watering the birds glad to be doing it or was it a sh1t detail. Perhaps both, now that I think about it. ha
This sounds like the D-day situation on the Axis side. Hitler was asleep and couldn’t be wakened to send the Hitler Panzers to the new front to repel the Allied invasion.
