Coming Soon š At the beginning of April, youāll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
Calvinās mom needs a suit like that a lot worse than Calvin does. But since she is Calvinās mom, she can never even begin to do enough to prepare for the unexpected.
Perhaps she should also include a shield, or just go with the full suit of armor, maybe even including the horse. And Calvinās mom and dad both need some sort of outfit to protect them from legal action ā you know, a law suit.
Since one can never fully prepare for the unexpected, success in life is really more about how well we are able to deal with the unexpected when it happens. We can try to anticipate various possible scenarios, but the best preparation is really to prepare ourselves mentally to be able to tolerate the unexpected and sometimes even to embrace change. Most major events will not follow our predicted scenarios, and we tend to expend too much energy worrying about things that will never actually happen.
Following Calvin and Hobbes day-by-day and reading the ever-changing postings on this site can be a little daily lesson in dealing with the unexpected, since each day we never know exactly what to expect, and what direction the topics of discussion will take. Even though we are reading 20-year-old reruns, the unexpected discussion each day adds a dimension of freshness to the experience.
Please note: Beginning this week and throughout the season of Lent, I will be on sabbatical from this site, focusing on education, contemplation, renewal, and home maintenance problems.
Hobbes, youāre a better man, er Tiger, than me (assuming youāre male).
While I have my Lenten disciplines - and reflection is a big part of it - this daily dose is not one I would like to pass up just yet. But it sounds like itās what will feed you, so go for it!
Hobbes-youāre going to be on sabbatical? So, this is a paid position for you? To be making comments on this site? I hope nothing too unexpected happens. Actually, I have a suit to protect me-a suit of bodyguards. Psalm 83.
If my kid has a helment on I wouldnāt be AS worried I guessā¦ Love to have a kid with that imagination, and it seems pretty consistant to me with Space ventures often, stuffed animal conversations daily and delivering snowballs to the cootie-holders they call girls. That vocabulary isnāt so bad either. Ignorance of adulthood is bliss even if you converse better than most. Gotta love him!
Seeing @Hobbes comment this AM, I am reminded of a quote from Dr. James Yorke, professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, and an expert in chaos theory, and who is credited with having coined the term in 1974: āThe most successful people are those who are good at Plan B.ā
This strip reminds me of the orange juice I think Minute Maid commercial. Group sitting around the table informing mom or dad what is coming his or her way. Also in the car what drivers will be doing. Always be prepared.
@HOBBES=Sundays in Lent arenāt fasting days, so maybe you could give us a synopsis of what you have meditated on during the past week on the Sunday comic. If not, I will miss you and your comments for the next 40 days.
āget a bulk discount?ā
I donāt know where to buy a bulk, whatever it is.
Iāve heard of a bulkhead (hatchway). (I hope the bulk of my puns are better than this.)
Mom, āa suit like thatā wouldnāt fit you, but maybe you can get one for your birthday. Iām sure Dad would like to see you in it.
Thereās so many people here wanting one of Calvinās āready for anythingā suits that Iāve completely lost count ā¦ but you might as well add me to the mix of wanting one of those too!
P.S.: Hobbes, Iāll miss your insightful comments here each and every day until the end of Lent. I hope you accomplish everything youāve set out to do while on your sabbatical.
Hobbes, I agree with mythreesonsāIt would be great to read any of your experiences through Lent. Lent is a difficult time for some of us and your encouragement would be welcomed by me, at least. As for me, Iāll try to embrace something I donāt usually allow time for in a hopeful journey to Easter. Blessings!

Good luck with the household maintenance, Hobbes. As for the rest, theyāll take care of themselves (and you) as you pursue them.

The trouble with being well prepared is all of the ridicule you get from the folks who arenāt. Until, of course, you needed to be.

Iām with prfesser: I wonder if we can get a bulk discount on protective suits? It sure would help dealing with RL.
thirdguy almost 14 years ago
Actually, Iāve changed my mind, I think that Hobbes may be a woman.
