According to Dead sound guru and acid chemist extraordinaire Owsley Augustus Stanley III (AKA “Bear”), who designed them, the Bears aren’t dancing, they’re marching.
https://mymodernmet.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/valtteri-mulkahainen-dancing-baby-bears-cubs-photography-9.jpg I was surprised to see these natural collars on cubs in a photo, likely origin of collar on dead bears. Also remember there being a line of laughing bears, very similar, on bottom row of back of an Alan Sherman album that clearly predated the Dead.
When I was on Active Duty, I was stationed at the Presidio and lived across the street from Golden Gate Park about two blocks west of the Jefferson Airplane. The City was better then before the druggies totally took over.
