Woodpeckers have a voice, in fact the Red-Bellied woodpecker has a VERY loud one!!

I know when the woodpecker wants a peanut, because he clings to a post near my back door and makes loud sounds. I hear woodpeckers all over the neighborhood, very distinctive chortle

People? The strip is and has always been titled “Believe It Or Not!®” Hm.

Woodpeckers make many sounds other than drumming. We have a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers nesting, when you get close they really scream at you. Their hole is in a cherry tree at the edge of the yard.

As if the dog had a choice.

My yard is filled with ladderback woodpeckers who make a raucous cawing noise! Their babies make a cute cheep!

Obviously author does not have any experience with woodpeckers near or around him. Guffaw!!! They absolutely CAN and DO have various calls. AND, it’s really cute to see them with chicks in the spring. We provide peanut butter cakes and boy howdy do they love them!!

Bonus. If it looks as though the jump’s gonna go bad the doggie will urinate a big enough pool to save them both…

Suddenly a memory of long ago surfaces: My 7th Grade Science teacher (yeah, SCIENCE) told us Bats could not fly, they climbed up the trees and then glided down. Moron he was, for sure. He also said Magnesium could not burn. I was in the midst of a demo of burning Magnesium when another teacher came in, asked what was going on, and I told him Mr. what ever his name was said Magnesium wouldn’t burn, so I was going to show him. hahaha,,,, man did he freak out and cancel the demo.

OK, here’s the deal about woodpecker vocal cords.

The writer of the feature apparently did do research on the internet and found the claim that woodpeckers have no voice because they have no vocal cords. Unfortunately, the claim is from an unreliable source, namely, an advertising site belonging to Bird-B-Gone, a business that sells products and services related to “bird control”. Apparently this incudes everything from netting (to block crop-eating birds) to ledge spikes (to thwart pigeon landings). No listing for scarecrows, though.

I think the error is from confusion over terminology. In humans and many other mammals, the vocal cords are part of the larynx, or “voice box.” Birds have no larynx, therefore no vocal cords. But that does not mean they have no voice.

BECAUSE… Most birds have organs (analogous to larynxes) called syrinxes. They usually have two, one on each branch from the trachea to the two lungs. A syrinx facilitates bird vocalizations. You could think of them as “birdvoice boxes.” Some birds can control each syrinx separately so that they can perform duets by themselves or even sing two different songs simultaneously!

When we had a bird feeder, a large woodpecker would come and eat out of it. If another bird got close, it would squawk like a mockingbird or blue Jay.

We used to have a red bellied woodpecker who, every spring, would announce his arrival by drumming on our gutter or downspout.
