I always think English must be very hard to learn because of that. Do other languages have words spelled the same, mean something different, and pronounced different?

Because of a long history of influence on English from many languages and a shorter history of regularized spelling.

All too many of these vagaries in the English language. E.g., slough pronounced sluff… to shed something such as skin and pronounced slow [rhymes with cow] a wetland, such as a swamp or shallow lake, often a backwater to a larger body of water. No wonder foreigners have so much trouble learning our language.
