I always think English must be very hard to learn because of that. Do other languages have words spelled the same, mean something different, and pronounced different?
All too many of these vagaries in the English language. E.g., slough pronounced sluff… to shed something such as skin and pronounced slow [rhymes with cow] a wetland, such as a swamp or shallow lake, often a backwater to a larger body of water. No wonder foreigners have so much trouble learning our language.

Because of a long history of influence on English from many languages and a shorter history of regularized spelling.
