These guys don[t care about George. They’re about tarnishing the protest marchers, and they’re in silhouette because they aren’t who they are blamed on being.
There are always criminal opportunists who exploit civil unrest to loot. They have no interest in the issue sparking the protests, it’s just a way for them to acquire things. When others are busy trying to enact change they go about smashing shop windows and grabbing stuff. No conscience, no empathy just selfishness. Kind of like conservative cartoonists.
I’m not saying Steve Kelly actually loots and steals, but he draws mean and tone deaf cartoons for money, which is just as bad.
I didn’t know George but would he want people to loot their local businesses that have just survived 3 months of quarantine to make sure those stores go bankrupt in honor of his name? Seems unlikely.
The looters are taking advantage of the demonstrations.. But, collateral damage, and worth the price if all these demonstrations actually affect the changes required. Sadly.. history would imply nothing much will change, there will be some tut.. tuts and hand wringing, but the “system” has a strangle hold on the nation.
Conflating anything democratic — e.g. protests — with anything criminal, like looting, is the specialty of the neo-fascist cartoonists … must try to make our constitutional democratic republic look bad!
Reading these comments it is apparent how many people are so over the edge fixated that they can’t think clearly or objectively. Sad commentary on today.
Yeah, you’re forgetting that the police are attacking protesters who are not a threat, and the POTUS wants to use the military Against those protesting peacefully. Kind of a bigger deal, seems to me.
This isn’t about George… people wouldn’t be protesting and rioting because of the death of one innocent man. This is about 400 years of systemic racism and abuse that just won’t stop. This is way bigger than George, and way bigger than “justice” for one event.
I’m flabbergasted that Skelly actually got this right.
Yes, they are just silhouetted profiles, but they are clearly profiles of young white men, and two of them are even wearing the ubiquitous MAGA hats.
We know that most of the overt breaking, burning, and looting is being done by white supremacist provocateurs. Lots of video of white guys walking along the street and breaking every plate glass window as they go along, tossing firebombs and rocks at the police, and otherwise fomenting mayhem.
I guess it’s a two-birds-one-stone when they burn out independent minority-owned small businesses along the way. Making the protesters look bad AND suppressing those uppity n!&&@rs.
“Barr, have those goddam protesters cleared out of there. Gas them and beat some heads in the process. I’ve got a great idea for a photo opp that will show how tough I am and it’s gotta be in front of a church. Get me an escort of a couple hundred troops and have somebody bring a bible.”
There is no excuse to loot and burn businesses. Period. Now, the businesses on 52nd in Philly (primarily catering to black customers and owned by black entrepreneurs) have been destroyed, and with out much capital to work with will leave them shuttered. Way to go guys. Enjoy.
Seriously, if you are aware that there is an opportunity to score a new TV while the police are occupied with arresting and tear gassing people who are just peacefully protesting, and you have the moral code of a weasel, why would you pass it up?
There are rumors that there are people, of both the black and white races, who have been photographed at various demonstrations in different states. They can grab what they can and resell it. Obviously recognizing a business opportunity that was previously unexplored.
There seems to be extremely little overlap between actual “protestors” and the looters. Some groups of protestors are infiltrated by troublemakers, but they mostly smash things and run away, they aren’t looters.

2 separate issues. And don’t let’s forget heavily armed right-wing reactionaries using the protests as an excuse to mount up to “save” U.S. society.

Looters and protesters are two completely different groups. Nice try.
