I remember looking this up in the past. Something about inferior cement, and stepping on the random cracks that appeared after the cement dried, not those made when the concrete was poured.
As kids we always said “step on a crack and you’ll break the Devil’s back.” So we always thought we were doing a lot of good by stepping on cracks – to the point where we thought we could therefore skip Sunday School….
