Transcript:
Person: And now....Elderpark director Miss Overdunne will light the first fireworks to start the show! Man: Short show, but I kinda liked seein' em all go off at once.
Spent the Fourth at Eureka Springs one year. Festivities were held at the lake with the city providing busses from town. The show was down-homey kinda stuff like Women’s Auxiliary dance numbers. Refreshing change of pace from the more polished acts back home was becoming.
Fireworks were set up on the swimming platform in the middle of the lake. Long about dusk, you could see the shadowy form of a rowboat gliding out to the platform, with the glow of a cigarette prominent as it climbed up. I said out loud “What kind of an idiot would smoke around fireworks?”. The lady next to me laughed and said “That’s my husband!”. Turned out she was the mayor.
Fort Hood, July 4, 1979 – we lived in the housing area nearest the parade ground, so could watch the fireworks from our backyard. One short series, then one of the guys lighting fuses dropped his cigar in a box of fireworks and everything went of about 20 seconds later. Very pretty, until the sirens started! 15 years later I was telling this story at the Battle Sim Center at Ft Stewart. I said it was very exciting. A voice pipes up from across the room: “You should have been in the stadium!”

This actually happened in our town one year. It was very exciting but only briefly.
