If you can believe it, back in the ‘70s, I was working for Radio Shack. When my store computer, (a Tandy 1000 model) wouldn’t boot up. I called tech support in Texas and their first (FIRST) advice was to give the desktop box a “medium thump” on the right front corner. Turns out that’s where the (5MEGabyte) drive was located. Durn thing booted right up.

I’ve done the same thing too. Nazareth College in the late eighties with an early model Mac. Colleague’s machine wouldn’t boot (after several tries) when I entered the room. I did my best (extremely bad) Southern Baptist impression “You shall work again!” and flicked it on its “forehead”.And it did. Surprised the Hell out of both of us.

Back in the previous century we called that “percussive maintenance”, and it worked quite well to reset chips, boards and other such things. Much to the horror of the user.
