As a teacher of a non-math subject, I found that simple pie charts helped – especially if it involved actual pies!

That’s not math, that’s simple arithmetic. Not that they teach arithmetic any more*, either, but we should be clear here.
Judged by many teen’s inability to count out change, or figure out change via subtraction.
