When my son was 4 years old, he taught me that rebooting does work. It was the mid-80’s and I was learning how to use a Mac at home. When the screen froze and I complained, he’d toddle over, stand on tiptoes, and reach to press the restart button to get rid of the mad face that appeared on the screen. A few months later he wrote his first sentence, no vowels but I could read it, explaining how frightened he was when he saw that mad face. I’d like to think that instead of traumatizing him, I taught him to “face” his fears. Or I could just blame Sesame Street for teaching him to read so darn early.
Rebooting is not designed to ‘fix’ anything(although, in a documented 34.76% of the time, it does). it is a stall tactic to give Tech support time to research the problem and possible solutions.
They replaced the water coolers with smart water fountains that keep track of the filter usage. The other day it started dispensing water without having a bottle under the nozzle and would stop if you did put a bottle under the nozzle. I had to reboot it. I never expect to ever reboot a water fountain.

You might have better luck Roy if you just grab the machine and shake the hell out of it. Maybe your candy bar would fall down.

Roy, the machine is trying to protect you from buying the Gag er Zagnut.

OK Scott, we’re on lock-down here – - you don’t actually get a birthday this year

A ZAGNUT bar! Definitely worth the effort, thankfully, not everyone’s ideal candy bar.

I’m going to print this out and put it on the IT bulletin board. I have a T-shirt that says “Did you try rebooting?“

When that happened to me I bought another one of the same type. That caused the hanging one to fall as well as giving me the second one.
