Bill Shatner leaves a lot to be desired. Avery Brooks or Patrick Stewart would be my choices for good role models. Perhaps George Takei would have been a good Captain but he only had minimal exposure in Star Trek 6.
No matter what Shatner was there first, and you can’t take that away from him. The other “captains” followed in his footsteps and all of them copied his acting style in their own fashion…
Shatner is the most egotistical bad actor I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. You should read his autobiographies! Then read the autobiographies of the people he worked with on the original series. None of them except Nimoy liked or respected him. They all had some pretty nasty things to say about how he treated everyone else and actively sabotaged scenes that didn’t focus on him.
I saw the Shat in “Miss Congeniality” 1&2. He acted entirely different from what one would expect. He is very passionate and expressive. Good actor, IMHO!

If she’s going to emulate a Captain, Patrick Stewart or Kate Mulgrew would be better.

“The William Shatner School of Overacting.” I want to see a politician or a preacher orate like Shatner. That would be compelling.

And let’s not forget that he’s not the best to learn from if you need to sing.

There was a broom closet in a performing arts school in Chicago labeled “William Shatner School of Acting”.
