I dig the Plagiarius awards, as I am an avid collector of bootleg/knock-off sci-fi toys. My priorities are different, however. While Plagiarius pays special attention to knock-offs that are very good at emulating reputable products, no knock-off toy finds a place in my collection unless it is so poorly done as to be utterly bizarre.

Here’s one example that I shall always treasure, the Mothra Larva knock-off that was sold as the “Horrible Uncanny Embryo!”

The women in the 1944 picture look like workers in a defense plant. Probably they operated lathes or other powered tools in metalworking.

You don’t normally see pictures of WW II workers (male or female) wearing safety equipment. Such photographs were normally taken by company photographers for their archives. When photos were taken for publicity and news stories, most people would take off their goggles or other protective gear, then spruce up a bit.

Tis a sad day when I don’t ignore copyright laws and print something from the Frog Blog. Is it Teresa or is it me? My HMO only gives me 4 more visits with my shrink.

My Siamese was sitting on my shoulder when I came across the “Bejeweled” photo on The Blog. Now we have to go shopping. I hope Wal-Mart sells something that looks like those baubles.

    Dear Comic Strip Artist

What do you have against the lowercase letter “d?” All the other letters are drawn with most or all of their important parts way up high; above the waist, so to speak. Poor little d’s substance is down around his ankles. dISCRIMINATION is an ugly thing. And, relatively speaking, you’ve turned him into a little d’d midget (nighthawks can tell you what that can do to your self esteem). If poor little d could speak for himself he’d say something like “How would you liked to be mocked by a comic strip artist?”

(OTTOd - are you with me on this one?)

    /s/ Big D

Frog Blog, Jane and Lizabeth Gotta love: One-piece windshield (probably pretty innovative at the time) Horn ring Front seats where you can snuggle up to the driver (and shift for him/her also if you’re so inclined, leaving driver’s right hand free for mischief) No seat belt/shoulder belt High roof Not so great: smoking allowed

Alye. I can’t imagine…she is neither fat nor ugly, but it doesn’t matter, they will still call her that and worse. Bullying was common when I was in school also. It seemed to me that bullies chose people who they found could be strongly affected, regardless of whether they were fat, ugly, geeky, or whatever. Maybe it’s just kids who aren’t nasty enough to call names right back, or to get physical. It seemed the bullying stopped around junior year, when kids got big enough to do each other serious harm in a fight. I don’t know what I’m saying, but the video just calls for a response, you know?
