Those idiot lights are strange and troublesome. Does it matter? What does it mean? (I have had to look a couple of them up in the owner’s manual, and it was not very helpful.) How dire is it? Could it have picked a worse time to go on?
It will go off again five minutes after the mechanic drives it into the bay. It will come on again on the Sunday morning of a stat holiday weekend when you are an 8 hour drive from home and staying in a small town out in the middle of nowhere.
The Check Engine light comes on when there is a failure that can cause emissions to 1.5 times the federal law allowed. Your car may “run fine,” but it is not operating correctly.
