Good morning, afternoon, evening, and night early readers! Dang it, I left because I was losing ideas on commenting, then Mr. Peirce gives me something to comment on :/
LOL, I love seeing this return to Nate’s comics as a full strip. It was such a classic, early staple of the series, and it was a shame to see it reduced to one panel on Sundays. Although, sometimes we do get a “Nate Wright Original” as a Sunday strip. Those are always good.
Oh well, might as well delete that “goodbye” comment. I wasn’t fishing for attention, honest. Let someone else have the featured comment.
OOH, that problem shook off the cobwebs. I’ll wait for the answer, but back then we had no calculators. I’ll have to go through my calculations again to see if I did it right.
YES! It has been a long time since I’ve seen Nate’s hand drawn comics with the exception of the sunday comics. I read a thing by Lincoln Peirce once saying that he’d stopped them because people had difficulty reading them. But I never have. I love them! And I’m happy to see them again!
He stops every 40 mins for 5 minutes (not “for 5 mins after 40 minutes of driving”) so he drives as follows:
40 mins @ 44mph = 29.348 miles leaving 538.652 miles to go.
He then stops for 5 mins and then drives for 35 mins, stops another 5, drives 35, etc (so at the end of 80 mins, he’s driven 40 mins, stopped 5 and drove another 35 and then he’d be stoppping again.)
35 / 40 = 0.875
0.875 * 44 = 38.5mph for every 40 minute period.
During any given 40 min period (except for the first), he’s driving at an average speed of 38.5mph. He can drive 25.667 miles in each period and he’s got 538.652 left.
538.652 / 25.667 miles/period = 20.99 periods.
21 * 40 = 840 miutes so far (remember, we have to add the first one back in so we’re taking 20 periods at 38.5mph and one at 44. He’s still got some time and miles to go, however.)
(20 * 25.667) + 29.348 = 542.688 miles in the first 840 minutes.
He then stops again for 5 mins so we’re at 845 mins now and have 25.312 miles left to go.
25.312 / 44 mph = 0.575 hours or 34.5 minutes (he does NOT need to stop again since he’s 0.5 mins shy of the 40 min marker.)
845 + 34.5 = 879.5 min or 14.658 hours or 14 h, 41m, 6s.
It gets weird. I make it 14.742424 hours or 14 hours, 44 minutes, 32 8/11 seconds.
The logic goes like this: Every 40 minutes he drives at 44 miles/hour for 35 minutes. This takes him 25.666666 miles. He does 22 of these taking him 564.666666 miles. This takes 14.666666 hours. He then drives the final 3.333333 miles at 44 miles/hour without a break. It takes 4.545454 minutes to do that last bit, so he isn’t ready for a break yet. This comes to the specified time.
Once all this is done, the Physics Police arrest him for violating inertia with his instant stops and starts.
I never thought about how great the wacky math problems you get in school would fit as a comic strip. Also, this is the first non-Sunday strip featuring Nate’s comics in a LONG time
i’ve been commenting on this website for almost 2 years now and a lot has changed, but not in a good way. i really miss when i was around when like comet man and poll wars II was pretty interesting but the thing i miss most is the old people who used to comment, like llama, and a lot more. i definitely wish i could go back in time and see that comment section again. i really will miss it. now things are getting out of hand. @therealfrancispope maybe hes a bit under age, but its only ONE person out of all of the ppl with go comics accounts, so just let it be. there’s just constant fighting, argueing, disrespect and all sorts of things. but imma try to put that in a different situation. i now declare, #getbacktogether2020. i don’t know if a lot of ppl will agree, but i hope to get this comment section back together. #getbacktogether2020

Show the math, people.
