As an adopted child, I always find this extremely offensive. Why is telling a child he’s adopted an “insult” requiring an apology? This is why there’s such a stigma about it. All older siblings tell their younger ones they were adopted. And parents always freak out whenever this occurs. Children internalize this and assume this means adoption is a bad thing. Jokes like this do not help.
I completely agree with you, Merrie Soltis. I’m also adopted – from 3 weeks of age – and this has always ticked me off. And especially in these days, when there are so many blended families, step-families, etc. Why is telling someone they’re adopted a terrible thing? It’s pretty cool, actually.
